On the morning of Thursday, March 12, 2026, at approximately 10:44 a.m., troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal traffic incident along North Carolina Highway 18 near North Carolina Highway 113 in the community of Laurel Springs.

According to officials, a Toyota RAV4 traveling north on NC 18 left the roadway to the right before striking a culvert and overturning into a nearby creek. Sadly, the driver, Richard Lee Goodwin, 72, of Boone, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators indicated that snowy conditions and traveling faster than what was safe for the road conditions contributed to the incident. Authorities also noted that impairment is not believed to have been a factor.

While details of the incident continue to be processed, what remains undeniable is the profound loss felt by Richard’s family, friends, and the community that knew him.
