They were beloved members of their community—individuals with unique stories, relationships, and an extended circle of loved ones who cared deeply for them. At approximately 4:40 a.m. on that fateful Friday, a Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office deputy on routine patrol noticed a vehicle running in the driveway of a residence where a protection order was in place. Concerned for those inside, deputies, assisted by the International Falls Police Department, forced entry into the home. There they found Ashley and Nicholas, both deceased from gunshot wounds. Authorities believe that Ashley died from an apparent gunshot wound and that Nicholas died of an apparent self‑inflicted gunshot wound. 

In response, local law enforcement agencies—including the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office—are continuing their investigation, working to piece together the full sequence of events that led to this tragedy.
