In Loving Memory of Lt. Col. Brandon Shah
The community of students, colleagues, and service members is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, a devoted educator, respected military leader, and patriot whose life was tragically cut short during a senseless act of violence. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him and in the halls of the institution where he dedicated himself to shaping future leaders.
Lt. Col. Shah was teaching inside a classroom at Old Dominion University’s Constant Hall, part of the College of Business, when a gunman entered and asked whether the class was affiliated with ROTC. When someone responded that it was, the attacker opened fire. Lt. Col. Shah, a retired Army officer who had spent much of his life serving his country and mentoring young men and women, was fatally wounded while doing what he loved most—teaching and guiding others toward service.
The suspect, identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, later died after students courageously subdued him. Authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are investigating the incident as a potential act of terrorism due to the suspect’s previous conviction for attempting to provide support to Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger paid tribute to Lt. Col. Shah, noting that he “didn’t just lead a life of service to our country—he taught and led others to follow that path.” Those words capture the essence of who he was: a man who believed deeply in duty, leadership, and the responsibility to prepare the next generation.
Throughout his military career, Lt. Col. Shah exemplified integrity, discipline, and compassion. He wore the uniform with pride and honor, dedicating years of his life to protecting his nation and standing beside fellow service members. Even after retiring from active service, his commitment to the country never faded. Instead, he chose to continue serving by educating and mentoring students—many of whom were preparing to enter the armed forces themselves.
Inside the classroom, he was more than an instructor. He was a mentor, a role model, and a steady voice of encouragement. Students remember him as someone who challenged them to think critically, act with integrity, and lead with courage. His lessons extended far beyond textbooks or lectures; he taught values—honor, resilience, responsibility, and service.
The bravery displayed by the students who intervened during the attack reflects the kind of leadership and courage that Lt. Col. Shah himself stood for. Their actions prevented further tragedy and demonstrated the strength of the community he helped inspire.
Today, his legacy lives on not only in the stories shared by those who knew him but also in the lives of the countless students he mentored. Every future officer, every leader he guided, and every young mind he inspired carries forward a part of his mission.
Lt. Col. Brandon Shah will be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to service—first in uniform and then in the classroom. His sacrifice reminds us of the profound impact one individual can have through leadership, kindness, and unwavering commitment to others.
As friends, family, colleagues, and students reflect on his life, they remember a man who stood for something greater than himself. Though he is gone, the values he instilled and the example he set will continue to guide many for years to come.
May his courage, dedication, and spirit never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Lt. Col. Brandon Shah. Your service, your leadership, and your sacrifice will forever be honored.
