According to officials from the Vigo County Jail, Jakita Brown had been arrested earlier that morning by the Indiana State Police on charges related to operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving while suspended, and invasion of privacy. She was transported to the jail during the early morning hours, arriving at approximately 3:10 a.m. Authorities stated that at the time of her arrival, Brown was conscious, alert, and able to communicate with personnel. She was reportedly moving on her own and interacting with officers.

However, medical personnel at the jail initially refused to admit her due to concerns regarding her condition. Out of an abundance of caution, they requested that the arresting officer seek medical clearance for Brown at a local hospital emergency department before she could be formally admitted to the facility.

The arresting officer advised that Brown had already been evaluated and cleared by a physician. Despite this, jail medical staff remained concerned and insisted that she be taken for another evaluation. Brown was transported again to a hospital emergency department where a physician once more medically cleared her.

After receiving that second medical clearance, Brown was returned to the Vigo County Jail and admitted into custody at approximately 4:10 a.m. She was then booked and placed in a holding cell. Officials reported that Brown was monitored regularly during the hours that followed.

Tragically, at around 10:00 a.m., jail personnel discovered Brown unresponsive in her cell. Medical staff at the facility immediately initiated emergency lifesaving measures and called for assistance from emergency medical technicians. Brown was quickly transported to a nearby hospital in hopes that doctors could save her.

Despite those efforts, Jakita Brown was later pronounced dead.

Authorities confirmed that there had been no physical altercation between Brown, jail personnel, or other inmates while she was in custody. At this time, the official cause of death has not yet been determined. An autopsy is expected to provide answers as investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding her passing.
