In Loving Memory of Javion Steptoe
Hammond, Louisiana — The Tangipahoa Parish community is mourning the tragic and untimely death of Javion Steptoe, an 18-year-old whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence on the I-55 northbound entrance ramp early Sunday morning. The devastating drive-by shooting has left family, friends, and neighbors heartbroken, struggling to come to terms with the loss of a young life full of promise.
According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene around 2 a.m. on February 22 after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, authorities discovered two vehicles pulled over on the entrance ramp near University Avenue. Javion Steptoe, who was one of the drivers, had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants in the vehicles were unharmed.
Investigators say the two vehicles had pulled over to exchange an item when a third vehicle allegedly drove past and opened fire, leading to the deadly shooting. At this time, authorities have limited information about the suspect vehicle, the shooter, or a motive for the attack.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the case and is asking anyone who was in the area of I-55 and University around 2 a.m. on Sunday to come forward.
