In Loving Memory of Otis Jikeam Giles

In Loving Memory of Otis Jikeam Giles

The community of Benson, North Carolina, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Otis Jikeam Giles, a beloved son, friend, and neighbor whose life was tragically cut short on a quiet Friday morning. At just 36 years old, Otis left this world far too soon, leaving behind grieving loved ones and a community that will deeply feel his absence.

On the morning of the accident, state troopers responded to a collision around 8:23 a.m. on Woods Crossroads Road near the I-40 overpass in southern Johnston County. According to investigators, Otis was driving his 2016 Dodge Charger northbound when his vehicle slightly crossed the center line while traveling across the overpass. In that moment, his car sideswiped a John Deere farm tractor being operated by 48-year-old Stephen Richard Thomas of Benson.

The tractor was equipped with a folded rear fertilizer sprayer boom. Tragically, the left arm of that boom entered the driver’s side window of the Charger and struck Otis. After the impact, his vehicle left the roadway, striking a cable box and two ditch culverts before crossing back into the northbound lane and finally coming to rest in a ditch on the right shoulder of the road.

Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Otis succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash. The tractor operator was not injured. Authorities reported that speed, inattention, and crossing left of center were contributing factors, and that Otis was not wearing a seat belt. While alcohol or drugs are not suspected, toxicology results remain pending as part of the investigation. Officials also confirmed that no charges will be filed in connection with the incident.

While the investigation provides answers about how the accident occurred, it does little to ease the sorrow felt by those who knew and loved Otis. Behind every news report is a life filled with memories, relationships, dreams, and moments that mattered.

Otis Jikeam Giles was more than a name in a headline. To his family, he was a cherished son and relative whose presence brought warmth and laughter into their lives. To his friends, he was someone they could rely on — a person whose company made ordinary moments feel special. Those who knew him remember his personality, his spirit, and the small acts of kindness that defined who he was.

Growing up and living in the Benson area, Otis was part of the fabric of the community. Places he frequented, roads he traveled, and people he encountered now hold memories that will not be forgotten. His passing is a reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly circumstances can change.

In times like these, communities often come together to support one another. Friends, neighbors, and loved ones will undoubtedly share stories about Otis — stories that celebrate the life he lived rather than focusing only on the tragedy of his passing. Those memories will continue to keep his spirit alive in the hearts of those who knew him.

Though his life ended far too soon, the impact Otis had on the people around him will endure. Love does not disappear with loss; it transforms into remembrance. Every shared memory, every smile sparked by thinking about him, and every story told about his life becomes a lasting tribute.

As Benson mourns, it also reflects. Roadways that once felt ordinary now remind people of the importance of caution and attentiveness. Lives can change in seconds, and tragedies like this underscore the value of safety, awareness, and the preciousness of each day we are given.

Today, family and friends grieve the loss of a man who should still be here — a man who had many more years ahead of him. Their sorrow is deep, but so too is their love for Otis. In the days, months, and years to come, that love will remain the strongest memory of all.

May Otis Jikeam Giles be remembered not only for the tragic circumstances of his passing but for the life he lived, the relationships he built, and the moments he shared with those around him.

May his memory live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the Benson community forever. 🕯️

Rest in peace, Otis. You will not be forgotten.
