In Moving Memory of Nadiya Perkins
The Huntsville community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of a young life filled with promise and potential. Nadiya Perkins, a 19-year-old student at Alabama A&M University, was tragically taken from this world in an act of violence that has left her family, friends, classmates, and community devastated.
Nadiya was more than a student—she was a daughter, a friend, a dreamer, and a young woman working toward a bright future. Those who knew her remember a warm spirit and a determined mind. Like many students beginning their journey through college, she carried hopes of building a meaningful life, pursuing her education, and making her mark on the world. Her time at Alabama A&M University represented the beginning of those dreams taking shape.
Tragically, those dreams were cut short when authorities say she was killed in an incident at an apartment on Julia Street. Following the tragic event, the Huntsville Police Department launched an intensive search for the suspect, Ahmad Khalil Barney, 20, who was believed to be connected to the crime.
Law enforcement agencies worked quickly and diligently to locate him. The search intensified after officers received information that Barney had been spotted on Shields Road. When police attempted to approach him, he reportedly ran into a wooded area, prompting an extended search by multiple units and agencies across the area.
Out of caution and concern for public safety, several schools within Madison County Schools were placed on a secure perimeter during the search. These included Madison County Career Tech Center, Madison County Virtual Academy, Mt. Carmel Elementary School, PACE Program (Madison County Schools), and Riverton Intermediate School, as officers worked to ensure the safety of students and the surrounding community.
After hours of searching the areas around Shields Road and Jordan Road, authorities received new information suggesting the suspect had left the area. Later that afternoon, just after 2 p.m., officers located and arrested Ahmad Khalil Barney on Century Street without incident.
While the arrest brings a step toward justice, it cannot undo the heartbreaking loss of Nadiya Perkins. For her loved ones, the pain remains immeasurable. Losing someone so young leaves behind unanswered questions, shattered hopes, and a silence where laughter and dreams once lived.
For the Alabama A&M University community, Nadiya’s passing has been especially painful. Universities are places where young people grow, build friendships, and shape their futures. Her classmates and professors now find themselves remembering the moments they shared with her—the conversations, the classes, and the small everyday interactions that suddenly hold deep meaning.
Friends describe Nadiya as someone who carried kindness and determination with her. She was at a stage of life filled with discovery and ambition. At only 19 years old, she had just begun writing her story. Her life reminds us how precious and fragile time can be.
As the Huntsville community reflects on this tragedy, many are coming together to support Nadiya’s grieving family. Vigils, prayers, and messages of love have begun to emerge as people seek ways to honor her memory and stand beside those who loved her most.
Though her life was tragically cut short, the memory of Nadiya Perkins will not fade. Her name will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her and in the collective memory of the community that mourns her loss.
Her story is also a reminder of the importance of compassion, unity, and vigilance in protecting one another. In the face of grief, communities often find strength in coming together—lifting one another up and ensuring that the lives lost are never forgotten.
Today, we remember Nadiya not only for the tragedy that took her life, but for the life she lived—the young woman she was, the dreams she carried, and the love she shared with those around her.
May the memory of Nadiya Perkins forever be a source of reflection, compassion, and hope.
May her family find strength in the love surrounding them during this difficult time.
And may her spirit continue to inspire those who knew her.
Rest peacefully, Nadiya.
