According to authorities, the tragic incident occurred around 9:53 p.m. on Sunday along Atlanta Highway near Whitehead Road in Oconee County. What began as a simple act of kindness turned into a devastating loss for a family and a community.
Investigators reported that a Toyota Camry had become disabled in the westbound lanes of the highway. In a moment that reflected his character and the kind of man he was, John Martin, of Monroe, stopped to help. The vehicle belonged to his grandson, and like many loving grandparents, Martin stepped in without hesitation to lend a hand.
As the two stood outside the disabled vehicle, trying to resolve the situation together, tragedy struck. Authorities say a Northeast Georgia Medical Center ambulance traveling westbound crashed into the rear of the Camry. The impact was catastrophic, forcing all three vehicles off the roadway and pinning both Martin and his grandson underneath the ambulance.
First responders rushed to the scene, but the damage had already been done. John Martin sadly died at the scene, leaving loved ones devastated by the sudden and unimaginable loss.
His grandson was seriously injured and transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, where he continues to receive medical care. Officials have stated that charges may be pending once the investigation conducted by Troop B SCRT is complete.
