HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. – The Harlan County community is mourning the tragic and untimely death of 19-year-old Bryson Kane Cottongim of Manchester, who lost his life this morning in a fatal electrocution accident in the Holmes Mill community along Highway 38.

Cottongim, a young man full of promise and dedication, was working as an employee of Apex Contracting, assisting with the installation of fiber optic lines when the devastating incident occurred. Reports indicate that while operating from a bucket truck, he came into contact with an active power line. Kentucky Utilities was immediately called to the scene to shut off the electricity, allowing emergency crews to safely attempt a rescue. Despite their swift and valiant efforts, Cottongim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bucket truck involved in the accident belonged to Harlan Community Television (HCTV); authorities confirmed that Cottongim was not an employee of HCTV, but rather was performing contracted work in the area. The circumstances of his death serve as a somber reminder of the risks faced by those who work tirelessly to build and maintain the infrastructure that supports our communities.

Responding to the incident were the Harlan County Sheriff’s Department, Harlan County EMS, Cloverfork Fire Department, Kentucky Utilities, and the Kentucky State Police.
