In Loving Memory of David Fischer
With profound sorrow and heavy hearts, the community of Owensboro is mourning the heartbreaking loss of David Fischer, a dedicated tow truck operator whose life was tragically cut short while doing the very work he cared deeply about—helping others on the side of the road.
On the morning of March 11, 2026, David was working along Interstate 165 near the Daviess County and Ohio County line when tragedy struck. According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a report just before 7:00 a.m. of a pedestrian who had been struck in the 6020 block of the interstate.
David had been assisting a disabled semi-truck on the shoulder of the highway—performing the duties that had defined much of his working life. While helping the stranded driver, he was struck by a southbound semi-truck. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, David was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the disabled semi was unharmed.
Authorities later detained the driver involved in the collision, identified as Suk Subba, 31, of Antioch. He has been charged with manslaughter, wanton endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. The investigation continues as officials work to ensure accountability and justice for David and his grieving family.
But beyond the tragic circumstances of that morning, David Fischer was far more than a worker on the side of a highway. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud business owner, and a man known for his enormous heart and generosity toward others.
In a deeply emotional statement, his family shared their heartbreak:
“Our family lost my Uncle David in a horrific hit-and-run while he was doing his job — helping a stranded driver on the side of the road. Tow truck drivers and roadside workers stand just feet from speeding traffic every day. Today that danger became our family’s reality.”
David’s life was defined by compassion and service. Every day he stepped out onto busy roadways to help people in distress—drivers stranded by breakdowns, accidents, or emergencies. For many, he was the reassuring presence who arrived when they needed help the most.
Yet David’s kindness extended far beyond the road.
Family members remember him as someone who had a deep love for animals, particularly cats. Over the course of his life, he rescued hundreds of them, offering shelter, care, and safety to animals that had nowhere else to go. His compassion for animals reflected the kind of man he was—someone who believed every living being deserved kindness and protection.
He also took immense pride in his towing business. For David, the work was not just a job—it was a calling. Helping others, solving problems, and being there when someone was stranded or frightened was something he took seriously and approached with dedication.
But above all else, David loved his family.
His beloved wife Barbara was his partner in life and the person he cherished deeply. Together they built a life filled with love, memories, and shared experiences. Their children, Jennifer and Jason, were the center of his world. He was a proud father who found joy in watching his family grow, succeed, and thrive.
To them, David was not just a provider or protector—he was a source of laughter, guidance, and unwavering love.
His loss has left an enormous void not only within his family but also across the Owensboro community and among fellow tow truck operators who understand the risks that come with the job.
David’s passing also brings renewed attention to the dangers faced by roadside workers every day. Tow truck drivers, emergency responders, and roadside crews stand just feet from high-speed traffic to help others. Their work saves lives and keeps roads safe, yet it often comes with tremendous personal risk.
In honoring David’s memory, many hope his story will remind drivers everywhere of the importance of slowing down and moving over for roadside workers.
Though David Fischer’s life ended far too soon, the legacy he leaves behind is powerful. His compassion, his dedication to helping others, his love for animals, and his devotion to family will never be forgotten.
The memories he created—the laughter he shared, the lives he helped, and the kindness he showed—will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
As the community grieves, they also celebrate the life of a man who gave so much of himself to others.
May David Fischer be remembered for his courage, his compassion, and the love he carried for his family and community.
May he rest in peace, and may his memory continue to inspire kindness, awareness, and care for those who work on the roadside every day. 🕊️
