In Loving Memory of Devonta Lee
BATON ROUGE, La. — The city of Baton Rouge and the entire LSU community are grieving the heartbreaking loss of former wide receiver Devonta Lee, a young man remembered not only for his athletic talent but for his strength, heart, and unwavering determination.
The LSU Athletics Department confirmed the passing of Lee, who proudly wore the purple and gold from 2019 to 2021 as a member of the LSU Tigers football program. During his time with the Tigers, Lee recorded 11 receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown — statistics that reflect his contribution on the field, but only hint at the passion and dedication he carried in his heart.
Lee’s mother, Lacresia Brown, shared that her son had been battling cancer — a fight he faced with the same courage and resilience that defined his life. Her words paint the clearest picture of who Devonta truly was:
“He was a fighter and he loved everybody. [Devonta] was a good kid [and would] do anything for anybody. He loved football [and] he gave his all in anything he did. He worked out every day [and was] a very hard, dedicated player [who] never gave up in football. [I will miss] my son.”
Those who knew Devonta understood that “fighter” was not just a description — it was his identity. Whether in practice drills under the Louisiana sun, pushing through workouts, or facing life’s toughest challenge in his battle with cancer, he never backed down. His dedication extended far beyond the football field; it shaped the way he lived and the way he loved.
At LSU, Devonta embodied the spirit of perseverance. Every snap, every route, every practice repetition reflected his commitment to excellence. Teammates remember a player who showed up early, stayed late, and never hesitated to encourage those around him. Coaches saw a young man who absorbed instruction, worked tirelessly to improve, and approached every opportunity with gratitude.
But beyond football, Devonta was a son, a friend, and a source of light. His mother’s tribute speaks volumes about his character — a young man willing to help anyone, someone whose kindness matched his competitiveness. He was the type of person who lifted others up without expecting anything in return.
His journey with cancer revealed another layer of his strength. Fighting illness requires more than physical endurance; it demands mental and emotional resilience. Devonta faced that battle with courage, inspiring those around him even in his most difficult days. He showed that true toughness is not measured only in touchdowns or yardage but in the ability to keep believing, keep striving, and keep loving through adversity.
The LSU community now mourns the loss of one of its own. Tiger Nation stands together, honoring a young man who proudly represented the university and left a lasting mark on everyone he encountered. Though his time on earth was far too short, his legacy will endure — in locker rooms, in memories shared among teammates, and in the heart of a mother who raised a son of remarkable strength and compassion.
Today, we remember Devonta Lee not just as a former wide receiver, but as a fighter, a devoted son, and a young man who gave his all in everything he did.
May his spirit live on in every act of kindness inspired by his life.
May his family find comfort in the love surrounding them.
And may Devonta Lee rest in eternal peace.
