According to Jeff Stensland, Assistant Vice President for University Communication, the university received an unconfirmed report of an active shooter in the library, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement.
In response to the report, authorities began clearing the library floor by floor to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. At this time, no injuries have been reported, and there is no confirmed evidence of an active shooter inside the library.
Video footage circulating online shows an individual carrying an object. While some initially believed the object to be a firearm, others have suggested it may have been an umbrella. Officials caution the public not to assume the video depicts a threat, as the situation remains under investigation and unverified reports can create unnecessary panic.
Stensland emphasized the importance of following official university guidance during incidents like this. “The safety and security of our campus community is always our top priority,” he said. “While we take all reports seriously, there is currently no evidence of an active shooter at Thomas Cooper Library. Law enforcement is conducting thorough checks of the building as a precaution.”
During the incident, the university instructed students, faculty, and staff to shelter in place until law enforcement completed their review of the library. Officials encouraged everyone on campus to remain calm and follow official instructions, stressing that verified updates would be shared as soon as available.
