The Owensboro community is mourning the loss of 72-year-old Paul Kamuf, who died following a devastating apartment fire late Thursday night. Kamuf’s family confirmed his identity on Saturday afternoon, bringing clarity to the tragedy that has shaken the Evergreen Drive neighborhood.
According to a release from the City of Owensboro, the fire broke out at approximately 11:52 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, inside a four-plex apartment building located in the 3900 block of Evergreen Drive. A neighbor first reported the blaze, prompting a rapid emergency response.
Officials say an Owensboro Police Department officer arrived on the scene before fire crews and discovered that the apartment was already engulfed in flames, with a resident still trapped inside. Demonstrating remarkable courage, the officer entered the burning unit and was able to pull the resident—later identified as Kamuf—out of the building.
Once outside, Owensboro Fire Department crews and EMS personnel immediately began administering medical treatment. Kamuf was rushed to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital and subsequently transferred to a specialized burn care unit in Louisville due to the severity of his injuries. Tragically, despite all efforts, Kamuf succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Friday, August 29.
Meanwhile, fire crews from OFD Engine 3 arrived at 11:58 p.m., just minutes after the initial dispatch. Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack to knock down the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to the other three apartments in the complex. Thanks to their swift action, the blaze was contained, the building was safely evacuated, and no additional injuries or property losses were reported.
At this time, the Owensboro Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. No official determination has been made, and officials say more information will be released as the investigation progresses.
The loss of Paul Kamuf has left his family, friends, and neighbors grieving deeply. A longtime Owensboro resident, Kamuf was described by those who knew him as a kindhearted and friendly man who enjoyed a quiet life. His passing marks a profound tragedy for his loved ones and the wider community, who are now rallying together in support of the family during this difficult time.
City officials praised the quick actions of the Owensboro police officer who risked his life to rescue Kamuf from the burning apartment, as well as the professionalism of the Owensboro Fire Department in containing the fire before it caused further devastation.
As the investigation continues, the Evergreen Drive community reflects on the fragility of life and the bravery of first responders who acted selflessly in the face of danger.
Funeral arrangements for Paul Kamuf are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
