ALLIANCE, Neb. – Authorities in Alliance have confirmed new details following a tragic murder-suicide that unfolded last week, leaving 73-year-old Douglas Stinnette and his wife, 65-year-old Melody Stinnette, dead.
On Thursday, initial scanner traffic indicated that a woman had been shot outside her home in Alliance. Shortly after, it was reported that the suspected shooter, her husband, turned the gun on himself. While police typically work to keep certain details private in order to discourage onlookers from gathering near sensitive locations, the address of the scene circulated quickly—shared by both officials and neighbors.
The Alliance Police Department has since released the identities of the deceased as Douglas and Melody Stinnette. According to investigators, Douglas died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and Melody was fatally shot outside their home. The case has been formally closed as a murder-suicide.
The Stinnettes were known in town, and news of their deaths has left the small community shaken. Neighbors and friends have expressed shock, noting that the couple had lived in Alliance for years. Many described Melody as kindhearted and active in the community, while Douglas was remembered as a familiar face around town.
This tragic event underscores the difficult and complex issues surrounding domestic violence, mental health, and gun-related tragedies. Local officials are encouraging residents to look out for one another and to reach out for help when they see signs of distress in loved ones.
The Alliance Police Department has asked the public to respect the family’s privacy during this time of mourning. Support services and counseling have been made available to community members impacted by the tragedy.
