PEMBROKE, N.Y. – A tragic accident on Interstate 90 near Pembroke has left multiple people dead and sent dozens more to area hospitals after a tour bus carrying 54 passengers veered off the road Saturday morning.
According to the New York State Police (NYSP), the bus, operated by M&Y Tour Inc. of Staten Island, was traveling eastbound from Niagara Falls to New York City when the driver lost control just before Exit 48A. Authorities say the bus swerved into the median, overcorrected, and ultimately crashed into a ditch.
Fatalities and Injuries Confirmed
The impact was catastrophic. Five people were pronounced dead at the scene, while many others sustained serious injuries. At least 10 victims remain in critical condition, according to early reports from local hospitals. Authorities confirmed that no children were among the deceased, though several minors aboard the bus were transported for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
State Police described a chaotic and heartbreaking scene when first responders arrived. Multiple passengers had been ejected from the vehicle, while others were trapped inside the wreckage. Firefighters, paramedics, and troopers worked frantically to extract victims, provide emergency care, and transport the injured to medical facilities across the region.
Investigation Underway
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation. At this time, officials have ruled out mechanical failure and driver impairment as causes of the crash. The 56-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, is cooperating fully with authorities.
“We are committed to determining exactly what happened and why,” said NYSP Troop A Commander Major James Hall. “Our priority right now is supporting the victims, their families, and ensuring that all evidence is properly collected.”
Investigators are asking anyone who may have been traveling along I-90 near Pembroke between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. and has dashcam footage of the incident to contact the New York State Police at 585-344-6200.
Red Cross Mobilizes, Families Reunited
With passengers hailing from various states and countries, the American Red Cross has established a Family Reunification Center at the Amherst Senior Center in Erie County. Volunteers are assisting survivors with shelter, translation services, and contacting loved ones.
“This is a devastating tragedy,” said Red Cross spokesperson Linda Walker. “Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and to those who are anxiously waiting for word on their relatives.”
Community Response and Ongoing Support
The crash has sent shockwaves throughout Western New York, with local leaders pledging support for the victims. Hospitals in Buffalo, Batavia, and Rochester have activated mass casualty protocols to handle the influx of patients.
Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement expressing condolences and gratitude to first responders:
“My deepest sympathies are with the families affected by this horrific crash. I thank the brave emergency personnel who responded quickly and worked tirelessly to save lives. The state will continue to provide every resource needed during this difficult time.”
Next Steps
The bus remains at the crash site as investigators conduct a full mechanical inspection despite early indications that the vehicle was functioning properly. A full report on the incident is expected in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, grief counselors have been dispatched to aid survivors, and support services are being coordinated for the families of those who lost their lives.
As the investigation continues, officials are urging patience and compassion:
“This is a complex, emotional, and tragic event,” said Major Hall. “Our focus remains on the victims, their families, and uncovering the truth.”
