The Marinette, Wisconsin community is mourning the devastating loss of 13-year-old Jakob Bowerman, a beloved son, friend, and classmate, whose life was cut short after a drowning incident at Menekaunee Harbor Boat Launch. Jakob, who passed away on August 23, 2025, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay, leaves behind his grieving mother, family, and friends who describe him as a kind, gentle, and bright young soul taken far too soon.
Jakob’s death, now the center of a criminal case, has shaken the community and placed attention on those responsible. 21-year-old Tylor Robert Birch has been officially charged with second-degree reckless homicide in connection with Jakob’s passing. A teenager identified in court documents as P.C. was also involved in the incident.
On August 20, emergency responders from law enforcement, EMS, and the Marinette Fire Department were called to Menekaunee Harbor following reports of a boy in distress. Jakob was pulled from the Menominee River, unresponsive, after witnesses said he had been forced into the water. Despite life-saving efforts, he could not be revived. He was transferred from Aurora Medical Center to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he passed away three days later.
According to the criminal complaint, Birch and P.C. initially told police that Jakob had jumped into the water voluntarily. But investigators questioned this version of events, pointing out that Jakob entered the river fully clothed. Jakob’s mother later confirmed that police had obtained video evidence showing Jakob being pushed into the water. Both Birch and P.C. admitted to throwing Jakob into the river “as a joke,” despite knowing he could not swim.
Jakob’s mother also shared that her son had a deep fear of water and had asked the boys if they could instead swim later in a shallower, safer place. Those pleas went ignored. Tragically, once in the river, Jakob struggled desperately, but rescue efforts could not save him.
Preliminary findings from the Marinette County medical examiner confirmed drowning as the cause of death, pending the final autopsy report.
Birch was arrested on August 21 and remains in custody. He faces up to 25 years in prison and/or a $100,000 fine if convicted. During his court appearance, his bond was set at $500,000, and he was ordered to have no contact with Jakob’s family under any circumstances.
As Jakob’s family grieves, they describe him as a loving boy with a gentle spirit who endured bullying but never lost his resilience or bright outlook on life. His death has left an unbearable emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him most.
The community has rallied around the Bowerman family, holding vigils and sharing tributes underlining the impact Jakob had in his short 13 years. His memory now stands as a reminder of the importance of compassion, accountability, and justice.
Jakob Bowerman’s story will not be forgotten. His family, friends, and community are united in honoring his life and ensuring that his voice — though silenced far too soon — continues to be heard.
