Tragedy at Annunciation Catholic Church: Gunman Opens Fire During Back-to-School Mass

What was meant to be a joyful morning of worship and celebration turned into horror on Wednesday, when 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire through the stained-glass windows of Annunciation Catholic Church during a back-to-school Mass.

According to authorities, the attack began shortly after 8:30 a.m., as students, parents, and staff gathered for the annual Mass marking the start of the school year.

The Victims

Two children were killed in the attack, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving families shattered. At least 17 others were injured, with some suffering gunshot wounds and others hurt while attempting to escape the chaos. Emergency responders quickly rushed victims to nearby hospitals, where several remain in critical condition.

Church leaders, teachers, and parishioners described scenes of panic and heartbreak as the sacred space became a place of fear.

The Suspect

Westman, who legally changed his name from Robert to Robin in 2020, was taken into custody at the scene without further violence. Investigators revealed that Westman’s mother was employed at the school affiliated with the church, though it is not yet clear if her role or relationships there played a part in the attack.

The weapon used in the assault has been recovered, and federal agencies, including the ATF and FBI, are assisting in tracing its origins.

Law Enforcement Response

Officers responded within minutes of the first reports of shots fired. Authorities have yet to announce formal charges but confirmed the suspect will likely face multiple counts of murder and attempted murder, among other serious charges.

Community Impact

Parents and children were seen clinging to one another outside the church as law enforcement secured the building. Many parishioners spoke of disbelief that violence could strike in such a sacred and familiar place.

Local officials have vowed full support for victims’ families and have arranged grief counseling for students, staff, and community members. Vigils are already being planned for the two young lives lost.
