Three Dead in East St. Louis House Fire — Sylvester Reeves, Pierre Maley, and Cheryl Johnson Among Victims

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — Tragedy struck East St. Louis Friday morning when a house fire claimed the lives of 95-year-old Sylvester Reeves, 55-year-old Pierre Maley, and 60-year-old Cheryl Johnson, according to officials. The fire broke out just before 7 a.m. at a residence on the 3300 block of Bond Avenue, sending flames and smoke into the early-morning sky.

First responders from the East St. Louis Fire Department arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, all three were found deceased inside the home. According to East St. Louis Fire Chief, Pierre Maley was the caretaker for his 95-year-old grandmother, Sylvester Reeves, while Cheryl Johnson was Maley’s girlfriend.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with fire officials working to determine whether it originated from an electrical issue, accident, or other factor. The East St. Louis Fire Department, along with investigative units, are conducting a full review of the scene.

Neighbors expressed shock and sorrow at the loss, describing the victims as quiet, kind, and deeply connected to their community. “It’s heartbreaking,” one neighbor said. “To lose three lives in one home—it’s devastating.”

The fire has left local authorities urging residents to check smoke detectors and fire safety measures, especially during cold-weather months when heating devices can pose risks.

As the community mourns, family members are left to grapple with an unimaginable loss. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but loved ones are calling for privacy while they process the tragedy.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of house fires and the importance of fire safety awareness. East St. Louis officials have pledged to work closely with investigators to provide answers to the community as soon as possible.
