BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tragedy struck the Birmingham community on Saturday when 16-year-old Huffman High School junior George Camarius Daniel was shot and killed, and another teenager was wounded in a violent encounter on Huffman Road. Authorities have charged 20-year-old Adrian Sikweya Nyaberi with capital murder in connection with Daniel’s death.
The charge of capital murder applies because Daniel was inside a vehicle at the time of the shooting. In addition, Nyaberi faces charges of attempted murder for injuring the surviving teen and for discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. According to law enforcement officials, Nyaberi will be held without bond once he is transferred from the Birmingham City Jail to the Jefferson County Jail.
The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, when Birmingham Police Department’s East Precinct officers responded to a report of a traffic crash in the 1000 block of Huffman Road. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Daniel unresponsive outside of a vehicle. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at 4:30 p.m. The second victim, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment.
Officer De’Rell Freeman, a spokesperson for the department, said investigators believe multiple individuals had gathered at the location for reasons that remain unknown prior to the shooting. “We are still working to determine the circumstances that led to this senseless act of violence,” Freeman said.
The Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team quickly acted on the scene, arresting Nyaberi later the same day in the 1000 block of Huffman Road. While authorities have not disclosed a motive, police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing.
The Birmingham community is mourning the loss of Daniel, who was remembered by friends and family as a promising young student with a bright future ahead. His death underscores the continued concern over gun violence affecting teens and young adults in the area.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the shooting or the events leading up to it to come forward to aid the investigation. The Birmingham Police Department assured the public that they are committed to thoroughly investigating the case and holding those responsible accountable.
As the legal process moves forward, Nyaberi faces serious charges that carry severe penalties under Alabama law, including life imprisonment or, in capital cases, potential eligibility for the death penalty. Meanwhile, the community continues to grapple with the tragic loss and hopes for answers surrounding the fatal incident.
