Tasman Rugby Mourns the Passing of Mako Legend Shane Christie

Tasman Rugby is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Shane Christie (#82), a beloved player, coach, and proud representative of the Mako. Christie’s contributions to Tasman Rugby spanned both his playing and coaching career, leaving an indelible mark on the team and the wider rugby community.

Shane Christie’s playing career with the Mako stretched from 2010 to 2016, during which he played 73 games and became an iconic figure in the squad. He captained the 2013 Championship-winning side, demonstrating not only his skill on the field but also his leadership, resilience, and commitment to the team. Beyond his individual accomplishments, Christie helped lay the cultural foundations that underpinned Tasman Rugby’s future success, including their eventual Premiership titles.

Following his retirement from playing, Shane transitioned seamlessly into coaching in 2018, bringing his deep knowledge of the game and his passion for Tasman Rugby to the next generation of players. His efforts were instrumental in guiding the team to back-to-back Premiership titles in 2019 and 2020, further solidifying his legacy as both a player and mentor.

More recently, Christie continued to give back to the sport he loved through the FPC coaching group, remaining actively involved in developing young talent until 2023. His influence extended far beyond the field, shaping players’ skills, character, and understanding of the game.

A proud Tassy man, Shane Christie will be remembered not only for his achievements but also for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication to rugby. His teammates, colleagues, and the wider rugby whānau mourn the loss of a true legend whose legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.
