Taos County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Fatal Shooting on Toda Vista Road; Suspect in Custody

Taos, NM – In the early morning hours of Saturday, just after midnight, Taos County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to #72 Toda Vista Road near Lower Las Colonias in reference to reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered 28-year-old Ramiro Quezada of Taos deceased at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Quezada was pronounced dead shortly after deputies arrived.

During the course of the initial investigation, deputies identified a male subject attempting to leave the area. The individual, later identified as 26-year-old Jonah Ward of Taos, was detained on site without incident. After further investigation, detectives developed probable cause to charge Ward with Quezada’s death.

Ward is now facing charges of First-Degree Murder, as well as other related violent felony charges, and is currently being held at the Taos County Detention Center.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, and authorities are working diligently to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic act of violence. “This is a heartbreaking loss for the community, and we are committed to ensuring justice is served,” said Sheriff Steve Miera.
