Sheriff John C. Garcia and Undersheriff William J. Cooley Announce Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash in Alden

ALDEN, N.Y. — The Erie County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit, led by Sheriff John C. Garcia and Undersheriff William J. Cooley, is actively investigating a tragic two-vehicle collision that occurred on Friday, August 22, 2025, in the Town of Alden.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., the collision involved a Honda SUV and a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Walden Avenue and Genesee Street. The investigation has determined that the driver of the SUV, Carol Privitera, 80, of Amherst, was traveling eastbound on Genesee Street and came to the stop sign at Walden Avenue. The tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on Genesee Street with the right-of-way, continuing straight onto Walden Avenue. As Privitera made a slight left turn to continue onto Genesee Street, the two vehicles collided in the intersection.

Emergency responders from the Millgrove Volunteer Fire Department and the Lancaster Volunteer Ambulance Corps (LVAC) arrived promptly. Privitera was placed in an LVAC ambulance but was pronounced dead while en route to the hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured and is cooperating fully with the investigation.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that this remains an active investigation, and no further information is available at this time. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact the Sheriff’s Office to assist with the ongoing inquiry.

Sheriff Garcia and Undersheriff Cooley expressed their condolences to the family of Carol Privitera during this difficult time and acknowledged the swift response of emergency personnel.
