Robin Westman’s Manifesto Sheds Light on Inner Struggles Before Minneapolis School Shooting

In the aftermath of the Minneapolis school shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School, new details have surfaced about Robin Westman, the gunman responsible for the tragic attack. Prior to the shooting, Westman posted a manifesto that revealed a person wrestling with deep personal conflict, regret, and identity struggles.

Central to the manifesto was his long hair, which he described as “my last shred of being trans.” He wrote that he might cut it “on the day of the attack.” The document, written in English and Russian, portrayed his hair as both a personal symbol and a burden—a visible reminder of choices he could not undo without facing social consequences. Westman connected his hair and appearance to broader feelings of dissatisfaction with his transition, highlighting a sense of frustration and loss regarding his identity.

The manifesto illustrated a life constrained by choices he no longer believed in. Westman expressed deep frustration with his appearance and a belief that achieving the body he desired was impossible. His writings convey the perspective of someone struggling to reconcile internal identity with external realities, trapped by personal decisions and societal expectations.

Tragically, hours after posting the manifesto, Westman carried out the attack, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to several others attending mass. He later took his own life at the scene.

While the manifesto offers insight into Westman’s state of mind, it does not explain or justify the violent actions that followed. Experts stress that struggles with identity, regret, or personal dissatisfaction do not inherently lead to violence.

The focus now remains on supporting the victims and their families, reflecting on the importance of mental health resources, and fostering awareness about the challenges some individuals face with identity and personal conflict.

Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this devastating tragedy.
