Richmond Man Arrested in Shooting Death of 33-Year-Old Johnnita Russell

RICHMOND, Va. — Authorities have confirmed the arrest of 57-year-old Michael Sprague of Richmond in connection with the shooting death of 33-year-old Johnnita Russell, a tragedy that unfolded on Sunday, August 24, 2025, just days before Russell would have celebrated her 34th birthday.

According to Richmond Police, officers were dispatched to reports of a shooting in a residential area on Sunday afternoon. Upon arrival, they discovered Russell suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an intensive investigation, detectives identified Sprague as the suspect and moved quickly to secure an arrest warrant. He was taken into custody without incident late Monday evening and transported to the Richmond City Jail, where he faces charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Authorities say additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Police have not yet released a possible motive for the shooting but have emphasized that this was not a random act of violence. Investigators believe Russell and Sprague were known to each other.

Russell’s family is devastated by the sudden and violent loss of their loved one. Loved ones describe her as a kind-hearted woman with a bright smile who had her whole future ahead of her. Community members are expected to gather later this week for a candlelight vigil in her memory, celebrating her life and mourning a life cut far too short.

Richmond Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. They are urging anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in providing justice for Johnnita and her family.

“This is another heartbreaking reminder of how gun violence devastates families and communities,” a Richmond Police spokesperson said in a statement. “We remain committed to working tirelessly to bring closure to the victim’s family and to hold the person responsible accountable.”

Sprague is scheduled to make his first court appearance later this week.
