Remembering Ronald L. Hopkins: Visionary Leader, Mentor, and President of NAFI Passes Away

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ronald L. Hopkins, beloved President of the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI) and one of the most respected leaders in the fire and safety community.

Ron’s influence on the field of fire investigation and safety is immeasurable. Over the course of more than five decades of service, he built a legacy rooted in excellence, mentorship, and dedication. His career touched thousands of lives—whether through his leadership in the fire service, his time as an educator at Eastern Kentucky University, his tireless efforts through NAFI, or his many years of service on NFPA committees. Wherever he served, Ron’s wisdom, passion, and generosity left a lasting mark.

Ron had an extraordinary passion for fire investigation, a calling that went beyond simply a profession. He believed deeply in advancing the science of fire investigation and in mentoring the next generation of professionals. Colleagues remember him as a teacher at heart, always willing to share his knowledge, answer questions, and help others grow in their own journeys. His contributions elevated not only the organizations he worked with but also the entire fire and safety community worldwide.

While Ron’s professional achievements were profound, those who knew him best remember him most for the man he was beyond his work. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose love for family was the true center of his life. Ron’s passing is an immense loss, but his impact will continue to be felt in the lives of those he taught, mentored, and inspired. His work lives on in the safer communities and stronger professionals he helped shape.
