BRANDON, Miss. — Authorities in Brandon are actively searching for a suspect after a fatal shooting left one man dead Thursday evening. The Brandon Police Department has identified the suspect as 35-year-old Matthew Brian Kidd, who is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
According to Brandon Police Chief Joseph French, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Gayden Street shortly after 6:00 p.m. on August 28, 2025, following reports of a shooting inside a residence. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 33-year-old Christian Storey, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified Kidd as the primary suspect in the case. Authorities did not immediately release details regarding Kidd’s connection to the victim or what may have led to the deadly confrontation. Detectives spent hours canvassing the area, interviewing witnesses, and collecting evidence from the residence as the search for Kidd intensified.
Chief French issued a strong warning to the community, urging the public not to approach Kidd if spotted. “He is considered armed and dangerous,” French said. “If anyone sees him or knows where he might be, please call law enforcement immediately. Do not attempt to make contact with him yourself.”
Brandon police, with the assistance of neighboring law enforcement agencies, launched a manhunt Thursday night. Officers increased patrols around neighborhoods, businesses, and wooded areas in hopes of locating Kidd. K-9 units and tactical teams have also been deployed as part of the ongoing search.
Community members expressed shock and concern over the violence in their otherwise quiet neighborhood. Several residents reported being asked to remain indoors while police secured the scene and began their investigation.
Authorities have urged anyone with information on Kidd’s whereabouts to contact the Brandon Police Department at 601-825-7225 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward if their tip leads to Kidd’s arrest.
As of late Thursday evening, Kidd remained at large, and police stressed that the investigation is ongoing. Updates are expected as the manhunt continues and more details emerge about the circumstances surrounding Storey’s death.
