SHREWSBURY, MA — Residents in parts of Shrewsbury were urged to shelter in place on Thursday afternoon as police launched a large-scale search for an armed suspect near Jordan Pond.
The Shrewsbury Police Department issued the advisory for the neighborhoods surrounding Edgewater Drive and Plainfield Avenue, stressing that the public should remain indoors and avoid the area while law enforcement officers continue their investigation.
Possible Shooting Reported
According to police radio traffic, there were reports of a possible shooting incident near Jordan Pond prior to the search. Although details remain limited, unconfirmed information suggests that the suspect may have fled on foot. Authorities have not released a description of the individual at this time, and it is unclear whether anyone has been injured.
School Lockdown as Precaution
The situation prompted swift action from the local school district. Coolidge Elementary School, which is located within close proximity of the police search area, was placed on lockdown.
Town officials emphasized that the shooting did not involve the school and that all students and staff are safe inside the building. Nonetheless, out of an abundance of caution, access to the campus has been restricted.
“Please do not come to Coolidge Elementary,” the district stated in a message to families, urging parents to wait for further updates before attempting to pick up children.
Strong Police Presence in the Area
Residents reported a significant police presence in and around the Jordan Pond neighborhood, with multiple units canvassing the area and officers securing perimeters. Police have advised everyone in the vicinity to remain indoors until the situation is resolved.
Law enforcement has not yet confirmed whether they have located the armed suspect, nor have they announced any arrests as of this time.

Authorities are continuing to urge the public to avoid the Jordan Pond area altogether. Roads leading into the affected neighborhood may be restricted as the search continues.
