Dr. Mark Hostetler, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, dentist, and friend, passed away on August 19, 2025, at the age of 65. His life was defined by devotion to his family, commitment to his profession, and a love of the communities that shaped him.

Mark was born on December 29, 1959, in South Bend, Indiana, to Robert J. Hostetler and Agnes Mae (McMahon) Hostetler. He grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he formed lifelong bonds with the group of neighborhood friends affectionately known as the “Middleton Drive Boys.” Together, they shared countless adventures, laughs, and memories that Mark cherished throughout his life.

A gifted student and athlete, Mark excelled in cross country at Huron High School before continuing his academic and athletic journey at Hope College in 1978 as part of the cross-country team. He later transferred to the University of Michigan, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1981 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1985. His passion for education and athletics remained with him throughout his life, and he was a proud and loyal Wolverine fan, especially enjoying Michigan football and basketball.

For over 40 years, Mark dedicated himself to the practice of dentistry, where his skill, professionalism, and compassion left a lasting impression on his patients and colleagues. He was an active member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association, and the Central District Dental Society. His leadership was widely recognized, as he served more than two decades on the state peer review committee—six of those years as chair—and contributed nine years on the Ethics Committee, where he served as chair for two years. His legacy within the profession is marked by integrity, mentorship, and a commitment to excellence.

Mark’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He shared a beautiful 36-year marriage with his wife, Alicia, building a life rich in love, travel, and shared friendships. Together, they raised four sons—Benjamin, Michael (Allison Maebius), Alexander (Alexandra), and Stephen (Courtney McKown)—each of whom brought him immense pride. Mark was a hands-on father, actively supporting his children’s activities, coaching basketball, baseball, and soccer, and later becoming a tireless volunteer with the DeWitt Band Boosters for more than a decade.

Family gatherings often found Mark at the puzzle table, relaxing with a book, chatting with his “bourbon buddy” Dan, or simply watching the sun set over Lake Michigan. In recent years, his most treasured role was that of grandfather to his grandson, George, whose presence filled him with joy. He never missed an opportunity to share photos and stories about his beloved grandchild.

Mark is survived by his wife, Alicia; his sons and daughters-in-law; his siblings, Lori Hostetler (Michael Petersen) and Dr. Robert Hostetler (Nancy); in-laws Dr. George and Mary Ann Mansour, and brother-in-law Philip Mansour. He also leaves behind his nieces, Sarah, Ellia, and Corinne, who held a special place in his heart, as well as his cherished uncle, Joseph McMahon, and other brothers, Chris, Doug, and Jim.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mae Hostetler. Mark was deeply grateful for his longtime friend, mentor, and business partner, Dr. William Schoonover, whose support and camaraderie meant so much to him throughout his career.

Mark’s life was one of service, kindness, and love. His legacy will live on in his family, his profession, and the many lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in care of the Altar Boy Fund, honoring Mark’s faith and devotion to his community.

The city of Birmingham, Alabama, is reeling after gunfire at a local apartment complex claimed the life of 16-year-old George Camarius Daniel and left another teenager wounded on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, George Daniel was a junior at Huffman High School, remembered by peers and teachers as a bright young student with his whole future ahead of him. His tragic death has shaken classmates, family, and the wider community, sparking renewed concern about escalating youth violence in the city.

Police say officers from the East Precinct were dispatched shortly after 4:00 p.m. to the 1000 block of Huffman Road following reports of a traffic crash. Upon arrival, they discovered Daniel lying unresponsive outside of a vehicle. Despite lifesaving efforts, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at 4:30 p.m.

Nearby, a second teenager was located suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. That victim was rushed to UAB Hospital, where they are expected to recover. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the injured teen.

According to authorities, officers initiated the stop after receiving a citizen’s report of suspected drug activity. The vehicle, driven by Coiscou-Mercedes with Perez as his passenger, was initially pulled over without incident. But instead of cooperating with police, Coiscou-Mercedes sped away in a reckless attempt to avoid arrest.

The pursuit led police down Swanton Road, where the suspect vehicle ultimately crashed. Undeterred by the wreck, both Coiscou-Mercedes and Perez fled on foot into a wooded area nearby. Police officers, assisted by backup units, quickly tracked them down and placed both individuals under arrest.

During the search of the area, officers made several troubling discoveries. Investigators recovered a loaded firearm that had been discarded during the suspects’ escape, raising concerns about the potential danger to officers and the public. In addition, police seized cocaine from the suspects, further linking them to the drug-related activity that initially prompted the citizen’s call.

Both Coiscou-Mercedes and Perez were transported to jail, where they are now facing a lengthy list of charges. These include resisting arrest, attempting to elude police, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, and grossly negligent driving. Authorities noted that the reckless behavior displayed during the pursuit could have easily resulted in serious injuries or fatalities, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Local law enforcement praised the quick thinking of the citizen who reported the suspicious activity, as well as the rapid response and coordination of officers that led to the suspects’ capture before further harm could occur.

The case remains under active investigation, and police say additional charges may be filed as the inquiry continues.

 

On August 24, 2025, shortly after 11:00 p.m., the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department received multiple 911 calls regarding a subject who had been shot at the Ridge Apartments, located at 701 N. Oats Street in Texarkana, Arkansas. The victim was later identified as 19-year-old Gary Nichols, who tragically lost his life in the incident.

When officers arrived, they located Nichols lying on the ground outside in the complex suffering from a gunshot wound. Several bystanders were already on scene attempting to render aid. Officers immediately secured the area and continued lifesaving measures until LifeNet EMS arrived. Despite their efforts, Nichols succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives and Crime Scene personnel were quickly called out to begin their investigation. Evidence and witness statements gathered at the scene led investigators to identify the suspected shooter as 21-year-old Xavian Banks. He was arrested later that night and charged with Murder in the 2nd Degree. Banks is currently being held at the Miller County Jail pending further legal proceedings.

This case remains an active investigation, and authorities are continuing to follow up on leads. The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department is urging anyone who may have information related to this crime to contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 903-798-3154.

The tragic death of Gary Nichols has left his family and friends mourning the loss of a young life taken far too soon.

 

The community of Bridgeport and surrounding areas is mourning the loss of Andrew Ritz, 46, who tragically passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2025, after being struck by a Metro-North train in Darien, Connecticut. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed his identity following the incident, and his family has since been notified of his passing.

According to the MTA, the accident occurred at approximately 6:41 p.m. when Metro-North train 1583, traveling westbound on the New Haven Line, struck a person who was not authorized to be on the tracks east of the Darien station. Despite immediate emergency response, Andrew was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, no passengers or crew members aboard the train sustained injuries.

The MTA conducted a preliminary review, including video evidence, and confirmed that no criminality is suspected in connection with the tragic incident. Train service between Stamford and South Norwalk was briefly delayed, averaging about 15 minutes, while officials managed the scene and began their investigation. The MTA has stated that the investigation remains ongoing.

The Burke County community is mourning the loss of Wanda Williams Saxon, 71, and Linwood Douglas “Douglas” Saxon, 77, who entered into rest together on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Wanda, born in Waynesboro, GA, was the daughter of the late Lavern Alexander and Rose Vickery Williams. Known for her warm heart and dedication to her community, Wanda faithfully served as a member of First Baptist Church Waynesboro, where she was active in church ministries and cherished her role in serving others. She devoted many years as a secretary at Burke County High School, where she touched the lives of countless students and colleagues through her kindness and commitment.

Douglas, born in Augusta, GA, was the son of the late Linwood Douglas Sr. and Claudia Mae Syms Saxon. A proud U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam, Douglas demonstrated a lifetime of service—both to his country and his community. After his military service, he worked as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, tended to his farm, and contributed to the betterment of Burke County by serving on the County Board of Equalization.

Wanda and Douglas shared a deep, abiding love for each other, their family, and their community. As devoted spouses, parents, and grandparents—affectionately known as “Grammy” and “Pa”—their greatest joy was their family. They leave behind a legacy of faith, love, and service that will continue to inspire all who knew them.

In addition to their parents, Douglas was preceded in death by four siblings: Roy Saxon, Marvin Saxon, Jewel Saxon, and Marilyn Whitley.

They are survived by their three beloved children:

HAMPTON BEACH, N.H. – A family outing turned tragic Sunday evening when a 17-year-old boy drowned after being pulled out to sea by a powerful current at Hampton Beach.

The New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol reported that they received a call about a possible drowning at approximately 6:46 p.m. on August 24, 2025. Witnesses said the teen had been swimming with family members when he was suddenly swept away from shore.

In a desperate attempt to save his son, the boy’s father entered the water but also became overwhelmed by the strong current. With lifeguards officially off duty at the time, emergency personnel called them back to assist. Responding lifeguards entered the water, pulling both the teen and his father to shore.

Once on land, lifesaving measures were immediately administered to the teen as paramedics prepared him for transport. Both he and his father were taken to Exeter Hospital, where the teen was later pronounced deceased. His father remains in stable condition.

Authorities have not released the teen’s name due to his age.
