HENRICO COUNTY, Va. – Authorities have identified 39-year-old Tasha Baker of New York as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred Friday night on West Broad Street.
According to the Henrico County Police Division, officers responded to reports of a pedestrian struck in the 7000 block of West Broad Street shortly before midnight. When they arrived, they discovered Baker suffering from critical injuries. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that Baker was crossing West Broad Street when she was hit by a vehicle whose driver fled the area without stopping to render aid. Police have not released a description of the vehicle or driver but are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and traffic cameras in hopes of identifying the suspect.
Police said Baker had been living in Henrico for a period of time without a permanent address, and efforts are underway to notify any surviving family members in New York.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage and sorrow throughout the community. “No one deserves to die like this, alone on the street,” said a local resident who frequently travels through the area. “The person responsible needs to be found and held accountable.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash or the driver involved to contact Henrico Police at (804) 501-5000 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
As the investigation continues, those who knew Tasha Baker are remembering her as a woman who faced challenges in life but deserved far more than the violent end she met. A small memorial of flowers and candles has already begun to grow near the site of the crash, a quiet tribute to a life lost too soon.
Henrico Police have vowed to pursue every lead until the person responsible is brought to justice.
