WEST OAKLAND, Calif. — The community is mourning the loss of Tony Jerome Norman, 67, a beloved hospital security guard and devoted family man who was tragically killed while walking home from work in West Oakland.
On Wednesday evening, Norman was fatally shot near the intersection of 17th and Brush streets after becoming caught in crossfire between two vehicles. According to his family, Norman had just finished his shift as a security guard at Kaiser and was returning home from BART when the gunfire erupted.
His wife, heartbroken and in disbelief, told KTVU that she witnessed paramedics attempting to save Norman’s life before realizing the victim was her husband. “It’s just like the O.K. Corral out here,” she said, describing the sense of chaos and danger that has plagued the neighborhood.
Despite efforts by emergency responders, Norman succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Originally from North Carolina, Norman moved to California decades ago and built a life defined by hard work, love for his family, and service to others. His family described him as a diligent, honorable man who always showed up for his responsibilities and the people who depended on him.
A verified GoFundMe campaign created on behalf of the family paints a picture of a man who was both dependable and kind. “Tony was merely crossing the street on his way home when he was tragically shot—an innocent victim ensnared in gunfire that had no connection to him or his actions. He never returned home that night,” the family wrote.
The tribute continued: “Tony did not deserve this. He was a man who consistently showed up, performed his duties, cherished his family, and lived with honor. His absence has created a profound emptiness in our lives.”
Funds from the campaign will go toward funeral and burial costs, helping the family honor Norman’s life and memory during this sudden and devastating loss.
The Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Unit is actively investigating the shooting. As of now, authorities have not released details regarding potential suspects or the motive behind the gunfire. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Norman’s death has struck a deep chord within the community — not only because of the senseless nature of his passing but also because of the example he set through his quiet, everyday contributions.
