Authorities have released the mugshot of 25-year-old Curtis James, Jr., the suspect accused in Friday morning’s shooting at Ingalls Shipbuilding, a violent incident that forced a temporary lockdown of the Pascagoula shipyard and sent shockwaves through the local community.
The suspect, a resident of Mobile, Alabama, is currently being held in the Jackson County Adult Detention Center. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, James has been formally charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
The shooting occurred early Friday morning on the shipyard premises, prompting an immediate and heavy law enforcement response. The facility was locked down for several hours as security personnel and officers from multiple agencies worked to secure the area and ensure the safety of thousands of employees. Workers were later released from the site with pay as investigators continued to process the scene.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive in the case or the specific circumstances that led to the shooting. However, officials have confirmed that this is an active investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming as evidence is reviewed.
Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Blanchette issued a statement on Friday expressing deep concern for employees impacted by the incident and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to workplace safety:
“This has been a deeply troubling day for everyone at Ingalls,” Blanchette said. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation and will continue to provide support to our employees, including counseling services, as we navigate the aftermath of this tragedy.”
The shooting has sparked renewed conversations about workplace security in high-capacity industrial environments like shipyards, where thousands of workers are present daily. Community leaders have also voiced their condolences to those affected and expressed confidence that justice will be pursued.
Curtis James, Jr. is expected to make his initial court appearance in the coming days. Prosecutors have indicated they will seek the maximum penalty allowable under Mississippi law.
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department or Crime Stoppers at (877) 787-5898.
