SALINAS, Calif. — Authorities reported a tense but fortunate outcome Monday night after an accidental shooting at a residence on the 1000 block of Declaration Street. The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m., prompting a swift response from the Salinas Police Department.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a 21-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her foot. Officials confirmed that the injury was accidental. At the time of the shooting, there were eight individuals inside the home, though police have not released further details about the circumstances that led to the incident or the identities of those present.
During the investigation, officers learned that one of the residents was on probation, which prompted a search of the residence. During that search, police determined that a 17-year-old male juvenile, who was related to the injured woman, was the owner of the firearm used in the shooting. The weapon was found to be personally manufactured and lacked a serial number, raising additional legal concerns.
The juvenile was subsequently arrested for weapons violations, including being a felon in possession of a firearm and a juvenile in possession of a firearm. Law enforcement emphasized that the arrest was related to both the accidental shooting and the possession of an unregistered firearm.
Fortunately, the woman’s injury was non-life-threatening, though authorities reminded residents of the dangers associated with unsecured firearms and stressed the importance of proper storage, particularly in homes with minors or other vulnerable individuals.
The Salinas Police Department continues to investigate the incident and has not released additional details about the ongoing case. The arrested juvenile is currently in custody, and the investigation will determine any further legal actions necessary.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with unsecured and unregistered firearms, as well as the need for vigilance to prevent accidental injuries in the home.
