IU Police Respond to Early Morning Shooting Near 10th Street and Walnut Grove; Suspect in Custody

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) has released an update regarding a shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 23, 2025, near 10th Street and Walnut Grove in Bloomington.

According to IUPD, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area and quickly discovered that an individual, not affiliated with Indiana University, had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Emergency medical personnel arrived on scene and transported the victim to a nearby hospital. The injuries have been described as non-life-threatening, and no other individuals were harmed during the incident.

Investigators determined that the shooting was an isolated incident and not a threat to the broader IU campus community. “At no point did we believe there was a danger to students, faculty, or staff beyond the immediate area,” an IUPD spokesperson confirmed.

Following a swift investigation, officers identified the suspect as 18-year-old Chaice Strickland, who is also not affiliated with Indiana University. Strickland fled the scene in a vehicle shortly after the shooting but was later located, detained, and taken into custody without further incident. He now faces multiple charges, including Aggravated Battery (Level 3 Felony) and Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony).

Authorities have not released details regarding the motive for the shooting but continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the confrontation.

IUPD is encouraging anyone with additional information about the shooting to contact the department directly. “Community cooperation is key to ensuring justice is served,” officials said.

The incident serves as a reminder of the university’s ongoing commitment to campus safety. IUPD will continue to maintain an active presence in the area and encourages students to report any suspicious activity to (812) 855-4111 or through the IU RAVE Guardian app.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
