It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Safety Officer Danny Edwards, a man whose life was defined by service, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his community. Danny leaves behind a remarkable legacy of more than 30 years in public safety, leadership, and family devotion—a legacy that will continue to inspire those who had the honor of serving alongside him.
Danny’s career with the department began decades ago, where his steadfast leadership and tireless dedication carried him through the ranks. In 2012, after serving with distinction, he retired as Deputy Chief, a role that reflected not only his professional excellence but also the respect and admiration he earned among his peers. Yet even in retirement, Danny’s calling to serve never faded. In 2021, he returned as an active member, and not long after, he was promoted to Safety Officer, a position that allowed him to continue sharing his wisdom, experience, and passion for protecting others.
His dedication extended beyond one department. Danny gave more than 20 years of service to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, where he played a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. He also retired from the Goldsboro Rescue Squad, further underscoring his lifelong commitment to helping others in their greatest time of need.
Danny was not only a servant of the community but also a visionary leader. He was a founding member of the Mar-Mac Fire Department Honor Guard, the Arr-Mac Water Response Team, and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. These contributions reflect his dedication to building strong, specialized teams that strengthened the department’s ability to respond to critical situations. His fingerprints are on countless initiatives that have made Wayne County a safer place for all who call it home.
Remarkably, Danny managed to balance his public service with his responsibilities to his family and their livelihood. Alongside his brothers and sister, he ran the family business—a testament to his work ethic, determination, and ability to serve both his loved ones and his community. Those who knew him will remember not just his professional accomplishments, but also his kindness, leadership, and steadfast devotion to family.
As colleagues, friends, and loved ones mourn his passing, we ask that you keep the Edwards family in your thoughts and prayers. The grief of losing such a devoted public servant and beloved family man is profound, but so too is the gratitude for a life lived with purpose, honor, and selflessness.
Danny’s journey of service may have ended, but his impact will live on in the lives he touched, the organizations he built, and the people he inspired. His memory will forever be carried in the hearts of those who served with him, learned from him, and loved him.
Rest easy, Danny. We’ll take it from here.
