With love in our hearts and tears in our eyes, we share the passing of John Edward Scanland, who peacefully left this world with his family by his side on August 29, 2025.
John was a man whose life reflected hard work, devotion, and deep love for his family. He is predeceased by his beloved sons Brian and Robert, and his parents, John and Marion. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength carried on by his wife of over 63 years, Darlene, his children Debbie (Lindsay), Judy (Butch), and John, as well as his cherished grandchildren Jamie (Joe), Ashley (Kevin), Jodie (Tamara), and Matthew. His memory will also be treasured by his great-grandsons Slade and Jace, and his sisters Marion (Frank), Catherine (Ed), and Ruth (Dom).
Throughout his life, John was known for his deep knowledge of and dedication to civil construction, his years of playing fastball, and his enduring passion for golf. Whether it was perfecting his swing or enjoying a round with friends and family, the game was not only a pastime but a source of joy and connection for him. His commitment to honest, hard work was at the core of who he was. John believed in doing things the right way, no matter how big or small the task—a lesson he passed on to those fortunate enough to know him.
To his family, John was so much more than husband, father, and grandfather. He was their source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and laughter. Fondly known as “Big Bad John,” he was larger than life in the eyes of those who loved him. He had a gift for making people feel valued, whether it was through his stories, his humor, his songs shared with family, or simply his presence.
The Scanland family extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Shaun Van Zyl and the oncology teams in Kelowna and Cranbrook for their extraordinary care during John’s illness. They also wish to thank Dr. Kevin McIver for his compassion and kindness in John’s final moments. The support, care, and humanity shown by these medical professionals will never be forgotten.
Though John’s absence leaves a profound void, his legacy of love, resilience, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be remembered always for his strength, his wit, his passion for life, and his ability to bring light into the lives of those around him.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be announced once arrangements are finalized.
Rest peacefully, Big Bad John. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
