In Loving Memory of Jeff Christiansen

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Jeff Christiansen. Jeff’s contributions to the diving and marine biology communities were immense, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Jeff was more than a diver and biologist — he was a mentor, a teacher, and a tireless advocate for the safety and education of divers throughout the Pacific Northwest. As a longtime Dive Safety Officer at the Seattle Aquarium, Jeff played a pivotal role in shaping dive safety standards that continue to protect countless divers. His guidance and mentorship fostered a community of responsible, knowledgeable, and passionate divers, many of whom owe their skills and love of the underwater world to his patient instruction and encouragement.

Jeff’s dedication to marine research was equally extraordinary. He led groundbreaking studies on sixgill sharks, contributing valuable knowledge to the scientific community, and played a key role in sea star recovery efforts. He was also instrumental in introducing and promoting Nitrox diving in our region, expanding the capabilities and safety of divers across the Pacific Northwest.

At Octopus Gardens, Jeff’s influence was felt in every corner. From co-teaching Naturalist classes with Don to inspiring volunteers like Diane with his knowledge, humor, and generosity, Jeff left a lasting imprint on everyone he encountered. His enthusiasm for sharing the wonders of the ocean, both above and below the water, was contagious, and his legacy continues to inspire all who followed in his path.

Jeff’s passion, dedication, and kindness will never be forgotten. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the diving community, and his impact will be felt for generations. We invite friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by Jeff’s life to share their stories, memories, and reflections as we celebrate his extraordinary life together.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jeff’s family, friends, and the many divers he mentored. Though he is no longer with us, Jeff’s spirit, laughter, and dedication to the ocean will remain forever in our hearts.

— With love and remembrance,
Your friends at YSS Dive & Octopus Gardens
