We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Bruce Comly French, a former board member of Ohio Citizen Action and a steadfast advocate for justice and community well-being. Bruce’s dedication and legal expertise were invaluable, particularly during our Sunoco refinery campaign, where he worked tirelessly to protect the residents of East Toledo from environmental hazards and air pollution.
Bruce was much more than a legal expert; he was a devoted Quaker, a compassionate law professor, and a principled champion of fairness and equity. His life exemplified the values of service, integrity, and compassion, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working with him or learning from him.
His commitment to social justice extended beyond the courtroom or classroom. Bruce’s guidance, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the causes he believed in inspired countless individuals to stand up for what is right, to act with empathy, and to approach challenges with courage and thoughtfulness.
Bruce’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched—students, colleagues, community members, and fellow activists alike. His example reminds us of the profound difference one person can make through dedication, skill, and a generous heart.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Bruce’s family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know him. May his memory serve as a source of inspiration, and may his life continue to guide us in the pursuit of justice and compassion.
