Homicide Investigation Underway Following Fatal Shooting in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz — Tucson police are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of 56-year-old Matthew Erik Simmerman on Saturday night. The incident occurred in the 900 block of South Warren Avenue near Aviation Parkway, prompting a rapid law enforcement response.

Officers from the Operations Division Midtown were dispatched to the scene around 11:45 p.m. on August 23 following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered Simmerman suffering from gunshot trauma in a wash. Despite immediate medical intervention by Tucson police and Tucson Fire Department medics, Simmerman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Tucson Police Department Homicide Unit have assumed control of the investigation. Officials reported that Simmerman was residing in the wash with a female companion when a suspect approached on foot and shot him. The encampment area has been processed for evidence, and investigators are reviewing the scene for clues, including potential surveillance footage and witness accounts.
