HAMTRAMCK, Mich. — Authorities in Hamtramck are investigating a tragic shooting that left two people dead on Friday, prompting grief and concern in a close-knit neighborhood near the Hamtramck Housing Commission.
Police said officers were dispatched to the 12000 block of Dyar Street, near I-75 and Caniff, after reports of shots fired. When they arrived, officers discovered two individuals fatally shot inside a residence. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly assured the community that no suspects are at large and that there is no ongoing threat to the public, suggesting that the deadly incident was contained within the home.
While police have not yet released the names of the deceased pending family notification, neighbors in the area shared with MDN what they believe led to the violence. Several residents described the shooting as the result of a domestic dispute, telling reporters that a woman had been shot by her child’s father, who then turned the gun on himself.
Hamtramck police have not officially confirmed these details but acknowledged that the investigation is ongoing. Detectives are working to piece together the circumstances that led to the double fatality, including interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence collected at the scene.
The quiet residential neighborhood was left shaken, with several neighbors expressing shock that such violence occurred so close to home. “You never think something like this will happen right next door,” one resident said. “It’s heartbreaking.”
The Hamtramck Housing Commission, which manages properties in the area, has not issued a public statement, but the case has highlighted broader concerns about domestic violence and the toll it can take on families.
As investigators continue their work, community members are urging support services for families impacted by domestic violence and calling attention to the importance of intervention before conflicts escalate into tragedy.
Police say additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released once confirmed and next of kin have been notified.
Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the Hamtramck Police Department.
