DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. – Authorities have arrested a man following a tragic hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of Charles Wayne Polson Jr., a bicyclist struck while riding along East McIver Road late Friday night.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP), the incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. last Friday when Polson, traveling westbound on the shoulder of East McIver Road, was struck by a vehicle moving in the same direction. The impact was fatal, and Coroner J. Todd Hardee confirmed that Polson died at the scene.
Following the collision, the driver fled the scene, prompting a thorough investigation by SCHP. Within hours, investigators identified Bryan Austin Davis as the suspect. Davis was arrested and booked into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center on Saturday night and is being held without bond.
Davis faces multiple serious charges, including hit-and-run involving a death and second-offense driving with a suspended license, according to detention center records. Law enforcement officials emphasize the severity of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident and the potential consequences of such actions under South Carolina law.
“The loss of Mr. Polson is deeply tragic, and our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the community,” said a spokesperson for the South Carolina Highway Patrol. “We are committed to ensuring accountability in cases like this, where reckless and unlawful actions result in the loss of life.”
Charles Wayne Polson Jr. was known locally for his love of cycling and outdoor activities, and his death has left a profound impact on friends, neighbors, and fellow riders in the Darlington County community. Residents have expressed grief and shock, highlighting the need for safer roadways for cyclists and pedestrians.
Authorities continue to gather evidence and urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the vehicle involved to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The arrest of Bryan Austin Davis marks a significant step in the investigation, but the focus remains on honoring the memory of Charles Polson and providing support to his grieving family during this difficult time.
