OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – August 26, 2025 – Deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a tragic pedestrian-involved crash that claimed the life of Jehad Alrayess, a 77-year-old West Bloomfield resident. The incident occurred shortly before 4:00 p.m. yesterday at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Elm Street in Pontiac.
According to preliminary reports, a 45-year-old Imlay City resident was operating a 2022 GMC Sierra with a trailer northbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when Mr. Alrayess entered the roadway. Investigators believe that Mr. Alrayess, who appeared to be lost, was attempting to cross the street to ask for directions when he stepped into the path of the truck.
Emergency responders immediately transported Mr. Alrayess to McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac via STAR EMS. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle was unharmed and fully cooperative with the ongoing investigation.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) was called to the scene to assist the Pontiac Substation deputies in thoroughly examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this time, investigators report that alcohol, drugs, and speed do not appear to have contributed to the incident. The cause of the crash remains under active investigation as authorities continue to collect evidence and review witness statements.
This heartbreaking event marks the fifth fatal pedestrian incident within the City of Pontiac so far this year. Additionally, the city has experienced five other pedestrian-involved crashes resulting in serious injuries, highlighting ongoing safety concerns for both residents and visitors navigating the area.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of vigilance for both drivers and pedestrians. Drivers are urged to remain alert, particularly in residential neighborhoods and high-traffic areas, and to always be prepared to yield to pedestrians. Likewise, pedestrians are encouraged to use crosswalks whenever possible, avoid distractions, and exercise extreme caution when crossing busy streets.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. Alrayess during this incredibly difficult time,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “We ask the community to respect their privacy as they mourn this devastating loss.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information to contact the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
