BENICIA, Calif. — A tragic motorcycle crash on the Benicia Bridge claimed the life of an adult male rider early Tuesday morning, prompting a partial closure of southbound Interstate 680 (I-680) as investigators worked to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Contra Costa Area, the crash occurred at approximately 7:58 a.m. on August 26, 2025, near the mid-span of the bridge. Preliminary reports indicate that the motorcyclist was traveling at slow speeds in the #1 lane (far left lane) when he lost control of his motorcycle and fell to the roadway.
Tragically, the rider landed partially in the #2 lane and was struck by the left rear wheels of a passing semi-truck. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but the motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
The collision prompted the closure of the three left lanes of southbound I-680 at approximately 8:13 a.m. to allow investigators to safely examine the scene and collect evidence. The lanes were reopened at 10:33 a.m., after the CHP completed preliminary investigative work.
The crash remains under investigation as officers work to determine the full circumstances that led to the tragic event.
