WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, OH — The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Fremont Post is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred late Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Route 20 just west of State Route 51 in Sandusky County.
The crash happened at approximately 4:36 p.m., when a 2013 blue Nissan Versa driven by Ernesto Chavez, 44, of Fremont, was traveling eastbound on US 20. According to troopers, Chavez’s vehicle crossed the center median and went off the north side of the roadway, striking a mailbox and then colliding with a barn before coming to a final stop.
One Dead, One Injured
Mr. Chavez suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sandusky County Coroner’s Office. His right rear passenger, a 10-year-old boy, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Mercy Health Saint Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where he is listed in stable condition.
Authorities confirmed that both Chavez and the child were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Emergency Response
The crash prompted a multi-agency response, including the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Sandusky County EMS, Lindsey Volunteer Fire Department, Bubba’s Towing, and the Sandusky County Coroner’s Office. The roadway remained partially closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene and crews worked to remove the damaged vehicle and debris.
Investigation Ongoing
The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash. It remains unclear why Chavez’s vehicle left the roadway, and troopers will be reviewing all possible contributing factors, including road conditions, mechanical issues, or medical emergencies.
Authorities have not released additional details at this time but are urging drivers to exercise caution on US 20 and other rural highways.
“This is a tragic loss of life, and our thoughts are with Mr. Chavez’s family as well as the young passenger who was injured,” said a spokesperson for the Fremont Post. “We will continue to investigate to determine exactly what led to this crash.”
