The Scott County community is mourning the tragic loss of Ethan Amberger, 26, of Perryville, who passed away Monday morning in a devastating industrial accident at Colt Rock & Lime in Scott City.
Scott County Coroner Cody Caudle confirmed Ethan’s identity following the accident, which occurred at approximately 7:21 a.m. on Rock Levee Road. What was initially reported as an industrial rescue quickly shifted into a recovery mission as first responders realized the gravity of the situation. Ethan was believed to have been trapped in a remote section of the quarry.
After hours of grueling work and the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies, Ethan’s body was recovered at 12:48 p.m. and released into the care of the coroner’s office.
A Unified Response
The recovery operation brought together a wide network of emergency responders, including the Scott City Fire Department, Scott City Police Department, North Scott County Ambulance District, Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Cape Girardeau Fire Department, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the Scott County Coroner’s Office. Heavy machinery was brought in by Cape Girardeau Fire crews to assist in navigating the difficult terrain of the mining site.
Chief Chris Griggs of the Scott City Police Department praised the teamwork of all agencies involved and emphasized the commitment and courage shown by every responder on the scene.
The Scott City Fire Department also expressed their gratitude to local businesses that provided meals for emergency crews, and most importantly, extended condolences to Ethan’s loved ones.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and urge everyone to keep them in their thoughts during this challenging time,” the department said in a statement.
