BREAKING UPDATE: 11-Year-Old Houston Boy Dies After Being Shot While Playing Door-Knocking Game

HOUSTON, Texas — An east Houston community is grieving after an 11-year-old boy died from gunshot wounds sustained late Friday night while playing a door-knocking game with friends. Houston police confirmed the boy, who was initially rushed to the hospital in critical condition, has since succumbed to his injuries.

The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. on August 29, 2025, when police say the child and several friends were playing a game commonly referred to as “ding-dong-ditch,” where children ring doorbells and then run away. According to witnesses, after the group had been knocking on doors in the neighborhood, someone began chasing the children.

Tragically, investigators report that the suspect fired multiple shots at the youngsters as they fled. The 11-year-old boy was struck several times and collapsed nearby. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported him to a local hospital, where despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead.

Houston Police Department detectives said one individual was detained at the scene and questioned but was later released. At this time, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not confirmed whether charges will ultimately be filed.

“This is a heartbreaking loss of a young life that should never have happened,” an HPD spokesperson said in a statement Saturday morning. “Our investigators are committed to finding answers and ensuring justice is served.”

Neighbors expressed shock and sorrow as news of the tragedy spread. “These were just kids playing. It’s devastating to know that something so senseless could end a child’s life,” one resident shared.

The Houston Police Department is urging anyone with additional information, surveillance footage, or tips related to the case to contact HPD Homicide or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

As the investigation continues, the boy’s family, friends, and community members are left reeling from a loss that underscores once again the devastating consequences of gun violence.
