Bessemer Woman, 29 and Expecting a Baby, Fatally Shot in Domestic Incident

BESSEMER, Ala. — 29-year-old Angelica Newton of Bessemer, who was about three months pregnant, was tragically killed during a domestic incident late Thursday night on 5th Street. Police have arrested 32-year-old Alfred Lee Colven, her boyfriend, in connection with the shooting.

According to the Bessemer Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire on August 21. When they arrived, they found Newton suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities quickly identified Colven as the suspect. Investigators confirmed that Newton and Colven were in a relationship at the time of the shooting. Colven was taken into custody and is now facing a capital murder charge, in part because Newton was pregnant at the time of her death.

Colven remains held without bond as the case moves forward. Court records are expected to detail further charges and a potential hearing date in the coming days.

The tragedy has shaken the community and sparked renewed conversations about the dangers of domestic violence. Family members describe Angelica as a loving, vibrant young woman who was excited about her pregnancy and the new chapter of life ahead. Loved ones say her loss is immeasurable — not only for her family, but also for the unborn child whose life was taken far too soon.

Community leaders and advocates are urging anyone facing domestic violence or threats to seek help and reach out to available resources before situations escalate to tragedy.

As the investigation continues, Angelica’s family and friends are left grieving a life taken too soon, and a future that will never be realized.

Rest in peace to Angelica Newton and her unborn child.
