Andrew Coates Obituary, Death – A Life Cut Short in Tragic Trenton Shooting

Trenton, NJ — It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Andrew Coates, age 41, of Trenton, who tragically lost his life late Friday night, August 29, 2025, in a devastating incident that has shaken the local community. According to Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey and Trenton Police Director Steve Wilson, the fatal events unfolded during a shooting that left Andrew dead and several others injured.

Around 11:25 p.m., Trenton Police officers were patrolling near North Olden and Ohio Avenues when they responded to a ShotSpotter activation—a system used to detect and alert authorities to gunfire in the area. As officers approached the scene, their patrol vehicle was struck by a car—tragically driven by Andrew Coates himself.

Investigators believe that Andrew had been wounded in the shooting moments earlier and lost control of his vehicle as a result. He collided with the police car while attempting to escape the scene or seek help. He was immediately rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where, despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, he was sadly pronounced dead in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Andrew’s sudden and violent death has left his family, friends, and community reeling. Known for his warmth, loyalty, and strong ties to Trenton, Andrew was much more than a name in a headline. His death marks a devastating chapter in a larger tragedy that continues to impact the area.

In addition to Andrew’s passing, several others were injured in the incident:

  • A civilian pedestrian was struck and injured by Andrew’s vehicle during the crash.
  • Two Trenton Police officers also sustained injuries in the collision and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
  • At the same time, detectives at the hospital were notified of a second shooting victim who arrived with a gunshot wound to the leg. This individual is currently in stable condition.

The violence did not end there. Investigators confirmed that two unoccupied vehicles were hit by gunfire, along with a residence on Indiana Avenue. Thankfully, no one inside the home was hurt.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information to come forward. Tips can be directed to:

  • Detective Jennifer Eyster: (609) 789-7346
  • Sgt. Roberto Reyes: (609) 256-0997

Andrew Coates’s untimely death is a grim reminder of the toll that gun violence continues to take on families and communities across the country. While the investigation seeks to bring justice and clarity, Andrew’s loved ones are left mourning the loss of a man who had so much more life to live.

As his family prepares for his final arrangements, they ask for privacy and prayers during this deeply painful time.

Rest in Peace, Andrew Coates.

Your life mattered. You will not be forgotten.
