IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 14-YEAR-OLD ARRESTED IN MAYFIELD HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME SHOOTING

MAYFIELD, KY14-year-old Johnathan “John” Miller of Fulton, Kentucky, has been arrested and charged with Assault 1st Degree in connection with a shooting that occurred Friday night during the highly anticipated “Battle of the Birds” high school football game in Mayfield.

According to the Mayfield Police Department (MPD), the shooting took place in the fourth quarter of the game and left 18-year-old Jordan Riley, of Farmington, Kentucky, seriously injured. Riley sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and upper torso and was immediately treated on scene by emergency medical personnel before being airlifted to an out-of-state hospital. Authorities have confirmed that he is currently listed in stable condition.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident followed a physical altercation between Riley and another juvenile. During the confrontation, Miller allegedly produced a firearm and opened fire, striking Riley. The suspect was quickly taken into custody and is being held at a juvenile detention center pending further legal proceedings.

MPD confirmed that the investigation remains active as detectives work to determine how Miller obtained the firearm and whether additional charges will be filed.

“This is an unfortunate and alarming incident at what should have been a safe and enjoyable community event,” said an MPD spokesperson. “We are committed to seeking justice for the victim and ensuring accountability in this case. We urge anyone who witnessed the altercation or has relevant information to come forward.”

The Mayfield Police Department received assistance from multiple agencies, including the Kentucky State Police, Graves County Sheriff’s Office, Carlisle County Sheriff’s Office, Fulton Police Department, Mayfield EMS, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).

Authorities are continuing to interview witnesses and review video footage from the game as part of their ongoing investigation.
