DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C — A deadly hit-and-run incident on E. McIver Road in Darlington County claimed the life of a local bicyclist Friday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP). The bicyclist has been identified as Charles Wayne Polson, Jr., authorities confirmed.
Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway reported that the crash occurred around 11:15 a.m., when Polson was traveling westbound on the shoulder of E. McIver Road near S. Charleston Road. An unknown vehicle, also heading west, veered off the right side of the road and struck Polson. Tragically, Polson died at the scene.
Following the collision, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving emergency responders and investigators to secure the area and begin their search for the suspect. The circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run remain under investigation, including the vehicle’s make, model, and possible witnesses to the crash.
Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee confirmed the identity of the victim as Charles Wayne Polson, Jr., expressing condolences to his family and community during this devastating loss.
