Two Arrested in Connection with Murder at Southern Drive Apartments

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrests of Tyron Shelley, 19, and Ta’John Goodwin, 20, in connection with the murder of an adult victim at 1051 Southern Drive on August 22, 2025.

According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), deputies were dispatched just after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday following reports of gunfire at the apartment complex. Upon arrival, law enforcement located the victim, who had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators immediately began piecing together the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Through evidence collection and witness interviews, authorities identified a suspect vehicle linked to the incident. Deputies located the vehicle at Tyron Shelley’s residence, where Shelley was taken into custody without incident. He has been charged with murder and is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Shortly thereafter, investigators identified a second suspect, Ta’John Goodwin. In coordination with Goodwin’s family, he surrendered himself to RCSO Headquarters on August 23. Goodwin has also been charged with murder and will be booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Sheriff Lott praised the quick cooperation between law enforcement and the families involved, stating that the rapid response and collaboration were critical in ensuring both suspects were apprehended swiftly.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting, including determining a possible motive and the sequence of events preceding the incident. Law enforcement is reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and gathering additional evidence to build a comprehensive case.

At this time, the victim’s identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Sheriff Lott encouraged anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Office.

“This is a tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the victim’s family,” Sheriff Lott said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring justice is served and will continue working diligently to uncover all details surrounding this crime.”
